Hi, I’m Dr Judith, and I’m one of the principal dentists here at Elevate Dental. Yesterday, I was speaking with one of my patients, Teresa from Malvern, who had lost several of her teeth in the past few years. She was actually having some trouble chewing food, and so she was interested in knowing what her options were to replace her missing teeth. Now, with the advancement of dentistry, there are actually quite a number of ways to replace your teeth, and it really comes down to how many teeth you’re looking to replace, whether the teeth you have right now are healthy and also whether you have a budget.
So typically, one option is to have dentures. These are false teeth that you put in and take out. Do you ever remember ads and movies where people remove their teeth and put them in a glass of water before sleeping? That’s what dentures are.
With dentures, you can replace anything between one tooth to several teeth, and they’re usually the most cost-effective way to replace a tooth, provided you’re happy to have something that you’ll have to take out and put in.
Now, if you’re like, “Oh, I don’t really like the idea of having to remove something from my mouth, I just want something that’s fixed,” then there are also a few options that are available to you.
In the past 10 to 20 years, something that has gained a lot of popularity are dental implants. Implants are titanium-based screws that are screwed into the bone. Once the implant is placed, it will actually look and feel exactly like your natural teeth, and a huge benefit here is that they don’t ever decay, and you won’t ever have a hole in an implant because it’s made of porcelain and titanium.
Now, with implants, you can replace a single tooth, or several teeth, or all your teeth. And it really comes down to what your needs are. As you can see, there are lots of different options and each option has its pros and cons. Usually, the best way to really find out exactly what option suits you best is to chat with an experienced dentist.
