What Are the Pros and Cons of Braces Vs Invisalign?

Hi, I’m Dr Judith, and I’m one of the principal dentists here at Elevate Dental.

So I was talking with one of my patients, Christie from Cremone, a couple of weeks ago, and she was wondering what the differences were between traditional braces and Invisalign. She had braces in the past and her teeth had moved so she was curious about the differences between the two and which one would suit her better.

That’s actually quite a common question that we get, so I thought I’d make a video to share with you what I shared with her.

There are a few pros and cons between braces and Invisalign. So, let’s talk about braces first.

Traditional braces use a system of brackets and wires to move teeth. Now, these are fixed on your teeth and aren’t moved or aren’t removed during the whole treatment.

The positives with braces is that because they’re fixed, the treatment is under the complete control of the dentist. You can’t remove them. This is actually really great for teenagers who aren’t that great at keeping things in their mouth. And this is also great for very difficult tooth movements where teeth have to move a lot because we have a lot more control over each individual tooth and where it needs to go.

There are a few negatives with braces though, and it’s definitely becoming less common to see adults with braces. A lot of people these days feel self-conscious of their appearance when wearing braces, especially those who deal directly with customers and clients face to face. Because the wires are there permanently, cleaning can also be more difficult and take a lot more time, which can also lead to a high chance of holes after treatment. Because of the nature of the braces and how they move, they get adjusted once every month. Eating can also be a little bit more uncomfortable, especially within the first week of them getting tightened.

Now, with Invisalign, Invisalign consists of a series of custom-made clear trays or aligners that move your teeth into position, it’s one of the most popular choices for many adults wishing to have straight teeth without having to wear metal braces. Now, Invisalign trays are removable. So you take them out to eat and to clean your teeth. This makes it a lot more comfortable to enjoy your food, and also means less risk of dental problems because cleaning is easier.

The main advantage that Invisalign offers is the flexibility of treatment. Depending on what your needs and goals are and your budget, we can focus on straightening either all of your teeth or just the front teeth or just the top teeth or just the one tooth.

With the latest 3D technology, you can also see what your final smile will look like before your treatment even starts. Most Invisalign treatments take between three and nine months. Because the treatment is spread out with small movers of teeth every time you change the aligner, they feel a lot more comfortable and they’re very, very easy to adapt to. Of course, this also depends on how good you are with wearing the trays because if you’re not wearing the trays, the treatment doesn’t work. And that’s probably the biggest negative with Invisalign, it relies a lot on your compliance. You need to wear the trays for them to work.

Now, Invisalign technology has definitely come a long way and we’re actually able to align a majority of smiles.

So I hope this video has given you a better understanding between traditional braces and Invisalign.
