What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are tiny rods that are implanted into the jawbone to replace a missing tooth root. Once placed, your body treats the implant like a natural tooth root and builds more bone around it to strengthen it. The implant is then ready for a crown, which will look and feel like a natural tooth. Your bite will be restored, and you can eat, talk, and go about your daily life with confidence knowing that your new tooth is there to stay.

The Solution for Missing Teeth

Dental implants can replace a single tooth, support a bridge to replace multiple teeth, or support dentures, so they don’t move around and irritate your gums. At the same time, these devices stimulate jawbone growth, which prevents the aged and sunken look of a deteriorated jawbone.

Dental implants have helped thousands of patients replace teeth to restore both function and a beautiful smile. And they are easy to maintain; simply brush and floss every day and be sure to get regular dental checkups to prevent decay or problems with other teeth as well as maintain the integrity of your implants.

The Benefits of Implants

Many patients prefer dental implants to traditional bridges and dentures to replace missing teeth. That’s because it is the only solution that stops bone deterioration while functioning just like your own teeth. The following are more benefits of implants:

Reduced signs of aging

Comfortable
Lower risk of receding gums
Stimulate jawbone growth
Anti-aging
Prevent surrounding teeth from moving out of place
Improved oral health
Durable and convenient
Unlike bridges, dental implants don’t affect the surrounding teeth
Dental implants can replace one or more teeth. When teeth are missing in a row, implants can be used to support a bridge. Traditional bridges can lead to bone loss in the jawbone around the bridge, which can affect your smile and cause a sunken appearance in the area of the deteriorating bone. Implant-supported bridges replace some of the tooth roots, and integrate with your jawbone just like a natural tooth root. The benefits of maintaining the full function of your mouth and the anti-aging traits of a strong jawline make these types of bridges more popular than traditional bridges.

Implant-supported dentures are another option to replace current dentures or consideration for those who may need dentures. As with other implants, having a series of implants keeps your jawbone stronger, which results in a more youthful appearance. And unlike traditional dentures, they don’t irritate the gum and allow you to feel at ease dining out or socialising as they will not shift or move.

The Dental Implant Process

Dental implants involve new technology to ensure your implant feels, functions and looks like a real tooth. If you are getting ready to have one place or considering getting an implant, the following steps are what you can expect.

During an initial dental examination, our experienced dentists will determine if your jawbone can support an implant.

If you are a candidate for a dental implant, we will take the steps necessary to begin creating your dental crown, which will look and function like your own tooth. This step may include digital scans, CT images, or taking a mould of your teeth.

If there is a remaining tooth or tooth root, it will be extracted, and the area will be cleaned. Anesthesia will be used, if needed, so you remain comfortable.

If you have too much bone loss, a bone graft may be necessary. The implant will be placed when this step is complete.

The implant will be placed in your jawbone and allowed to heal. It may feel “wobbly” at first, but your body will soon begin to treat it as a natural root and grow more bone around it, which will strengthen and stabilise the implant.

Number 6

When the implant is ready, the crown will be placed and the process is complete. You will receive individualised instructions on how to care for your new tooth.

Caring for Your New Teeth

Dental implants look and feel like your own teeth and must be cared for like your own teeth, as well. While the porcelain crown on the implant may resist stains, the crown and the area around your implant must be taken care of to avoid gum disease and other oral health concerns. Implants and crowns may not be susceptible to cavities, either, but bacteria can still build up and around the tooth if oral hygiene is neglected.

When properly cared for, your implant and the dental crown could last a lifetime. Good oral hygiene habits can also ensure your remaining teeth stay healthy, so you avoid future costly dental treatments. The following are general guidelines that will help you care for your implant and your overall oral health.

Went this afternoon for an appointment after not having been to the dentist since god-knows-when. The team booked me in at a time that suited me, were really easy to deal with, the process was simple and I was in and out (with a filling and an x-ray) within my hour lunch break. Dr James was really good and they made me feel comfortable and relaxed (even when I panicked over the big anaesthetic needle). The cost was really reasonable and I am definitely going to recommend to everyone.
