Emergency Dentistry Hawthorn Melbourne

Many situations can lead to a chipped or broken tooth, tooth pain or other situations that call for emergency dentistry. If you have an accident or need for emergency dentistry, our team at Elevate Dental Hawthorn Melbourne is here for you. Call and inform the receptionist of your situation and we will schedule an appointment for the same day. You will also receive instructions on what to do while you are waiting for your appointment.

What are Dental Emergencies?

Some people have bike accidents, skateboarding accidents, or other sports-related injuries that cause broken or chipped teeth. But accidents are not the only reason for a dental emergency. Sometimes a toothache will seem to come out of nowhere and when the pain is intense, many patients consider it an emergency.

Of course, if you have a situation that is severe, such as a broken jaw, or anything that is life-threatening, then you should visit the emergency department (ED) of your local hospital. For all other dental emergencies, you can call our office and we will schedule a same-day visit, then provide the appropriate recommendations for what you can do at home until then.

What to Do for a Dental Emergency

As soon as you have a dental emergency, call and schedule a visit with us. Be sure to let the receptionist know that you have a dental emergency, so you can be scheduled as quickly as possible. The following are some common situations and what you can do until your visit.

\

Chipped Tooth – A chipped tooth is a common dental problem that may be an emergency. Quite often, pain is not a factor with chipped teeth, but treatment should still be sought as quickly as possible to ensure there is no unseen damage and to prevent infection. Until then, rinse with lukewarm salt water to remove bacteria. Rinse as often as you feel the need, and avoid eating until your visit.

\

Cracked Tooth – A cracked tooth can be a result of trauma to the face or biting on something hard. Take an over-the-counter pain medication and apply a cool compress to your face in the area of the tooth to calm swelling. Keep your head elevated if you have pain, and call to schedule an emergency dental visit. Rinse your mouth with warm salt water every hour or two until your appointment.

\

Broken Tooth – A broken tooth is when a piece of the tooth separates from the rest of the tooth. In this case, save the piece of tooth and rinse it in water, but do not wash or scrub it, then call and schedule your emergency visit. If you can fit it back onto the remaining part of the tooth in your mouth, do so and secure it with toothpaste or over-the-counter dental bonding. If you cannot do this, drop it in a container of full-fat milk and seal it until your emergency visit.

\

Knocked-Out Tooth – Sometimes teeth get knocked out by accident, and sometimes it is possible to save it. First, call our office and explain your situation so we can schedule your emergency dental appointment. If you can put the tooth back in its place, go ahead and do so, but do not force it into the socket. If you cannot replace it, drop it into a container of full-fat milk and seal it. Bring it to your dental visit and we will do our best to save your tooth.

\

Abscess – Abscesses are painful bumps or bubbles on the gumline, usually at the base of an infected tooth. They may be painful and sometimes are not. Call and schedule an emergency visit with us as soon as you realize it is there, and rinse with warm saltwater. When you get here, we will help with pain relief, find the cause of infection, and provide treatment. Do not put off a dental visit as infections easily spread in the mouth.

\

Facial Swelling – Infections are usually the source of facial swelling, but hidden dental problems may also cause them. If you have facial swelling due to an unknown source, call and schedule an emergency visit with us right away. A comprehensive dental exam will help us find the cause so it can be treated as quickly as possible. Until your visit, place a cold compress on the area of the swelling and take over-the-counter pain medications to further reduce pain and swelling.

Toothaches

A toothache is the most common dental problem and cause of emergency dentistry. When your tooth hurts, it is intensified due to the collection of nerves in the root. Unfortunately, most toothaches are due to infections that can spread. Call and schedule an emergency visit with us and try the following to help lessen the pain and discomfort:
Z

Rinse with warm saltwater to lessen irritation and clear harmful bacteria.

Z

Use a cold compress on the outside of your face, in the area of the toothache.

Z
Combine a mixture of the herb, turmeric, with a small amount of water until it is a paste, then apply to the infected tooth.
Z
Apply either fresh cloves or clove oil to the infected tooth to numb pain.
Z
Dampen a peppermint tea bag and hold on to the tooth.
Z
Crush a garlic clove into a paste and apply to the infected area to kill harmful bacteria and reduce pain. You can also add a small bit of salt to enhance the antibacterial qualities.

These are Not Dental Emergencies

While the dentist has the equipment and skills to treat numerous dental emergencies, some situations require immediate medical attention, such as:
r
Intense headache that is not alleviated with over-the-counter pain medications
r
Profuse bleeding that will not stop
r
Fractured or broken facial bone or jawbone
