Children’s Dentistry

Children’s Dentistry Hawthorn Melbourne

Children’s dentistry is important for preventing tooth decay and infection, but there are many other reasons for bringing your child to the dentist when they are young. Regular dental visits help the dentist identify problems like jaw and bite abnormalities or crooked teeth, so they can be taken care of right away. This often results in less discomfort for your child and lower costs for you. In addition, children can quickly become familiar with dental visits, which encourages them to tend to their oral health and not avoid the dentist in the future. At Elevate Dental, we take pride in helping our young patients learn about oral care and promoting healthy practices that will last a lifetime.

Children’s Dentistry is More Than General

Children’s dentistry involves the same treatments as general dentistry, such as treating tooth decay, fillings, and teeth cleanings. But children also have requirements such as warding off gum disease, intervening with crooked teeth or teeth that grow in wrong, and wisdom teeth. Often, children are timid because the dentist office may feel overwhelming while a stranger looks into their mouth. But with the right experiences, a child can learn the dentist is not someone to be afraid of, as they develop healthy oral habits.

Had a pleasant visit. The staff were incredible and so is the dentist. A bit nervous visiting the dentist but they made me feel comfortable during the treatment.

Benefits of Children’s Dentistry

Choosing the right dentist for your children’s oral health can help them establish healthy practices that will keep their mouths healthy. They will have confidence in their smile, which can result in greater self-esteem. More benefits include calm and happy kids with less anxiety about dental exams. They will gain an increased awareness of how oral habits affect their teeth and let us identify sometimes hidden issues like teeth grinding. Our experienced dentists also understand how a child’s jaw and mouth should grow and can often stop oral problems from growing into health issues. Benefits of children’s dentistry include:
Experienced dentists who understand the needs of children
We create a warm and welcoming environment
Early primary tooth care and early adult teeth care
Teach children healthy oral hygiene habits in a fun and engaging way
Children learn the dentist is someone who cares about them
We work with you to oversee your child’s oral health

How You Can Help

While we take care of your child’s dental needs, you can help them feel relaxed and at ease before they even step foot in our office. The following are what you can do to help your child with their first dental visit.
^
Schedule appointments around regular nap times
^
Talk to your child about their dental visit ahead of time in a light and happy tone, as children can easily detect anxiety
^
Provide a healthy and light meal before the appointment and ensure they brush afterwards
^
Plan a healthy snack or activity for them after the visit
^
Bring a toy or book to engage them while waiting for their visit
^
Inform us ahead of time if your child has special needs or anxiety

Prepare your child

By talking to them about their upcoming dental visit. Other things you can do are watch children’s videos of first dental visits and read books with them, like Peppa Pig Dentist Trip. When you talk to them, use a happy tone and let them know that dentists are just a normal part of caring for their teeth and their health. And you can always take them to one of your dental visits and let them observe, so they understand there is nothing to fear.

The dental exam

May be stressful for young patients, and helping them through this will help them for a lifetime. If your child is very young, you can sit in the dental chair and let them sit on your lap. If they have a favourite blanket or toy, bring it along, and they can keep it in their lap during the exam. Our dentist will explain they are just going to have a look around before the exam begins, and that may help calm the child, as well.

Children’s Dental Hygiene

Teaching good oral habits will help children maintain oral health for a lifetime. While children’s dentistry is one aspect of oral health, strong oral care begins at home. Here are some fun ways to teach your child oral hygiene:

Z
Let them choose their own toothbrush and toothpaste
Z
Show them the right way to brush and remind them to not swallow toothpaste
Z
Read fun children’s books about the dentist
Z
Watch children’s videos about oral hygiene and the dentist
Z
Teach them how a healthy diet maintains strong teeth
Z
Let them listen to a fun song while brushing their teeth, to ensure they brush their teeth for 2 minutes
Z
Always talk about dental visits in a fun, lighthearted way
Z
While teaching how to take care of their teeth, avoid scaring them about cavities or other dental issues, which could invite fear of dental visits

What Happens at My Child’s First Dental Checkup?

I was speaking with one of our patients, Lisa from Abbotsford. She was planning to bring her three-year-old and one-year-old for their first dental checkup and was curious about what would happen at their appointment.
