Why Are My Teeth Discoloured?

There are many reasons for teeth discolouration. The problem may be due to diet, medications, trauma, or a number of other factors, and stains may come from inside the tooth or due to discolouration on the outside of the tooth or teeth.

\

Intrinsic stains come from within the tooth, usually as a result of trauma, an old filling, or decay. It may also be the result of medications like tetracycline. In any case, our experienced dentists will find the source and the best teeth whitening solution.

\

Extrinsic stains are the most common types of staining and discolouration that affect nearly all teeth. Teeth can become dingy with age or habits such as years of smoking, regular coffee and tea drinking, and even red wine. Some foods or herbs also alter the colour of teeth, such as turmeric or curry. Fortunately, these types of stains respond well to professional teeth whitening.

The Teeth Whitening Process

While we take care of the teeth whitening process, there are things you can first do to prepare so that you get the best results for your money.

Make an appointment for a dental exam to ensure there are no hidden cavities or other issues that may interfere with the process. Inform your dentist you are interested in professional teeth whitening. This will allow them time to examine your teeth and suggest the best type of solution for your situation.
Commit to regular brushing and flossing every day for at least two weeks before your teeth whitening appointment.
Allow your dentist to suggest the best shades of white, as overly white teeth can look unnatural and even be distracting.
If needed, ask your dentist about desensitising toothpaste before your whitening appointment, and use it for at least one week before.
5
Schedule a professional teeth cleaning treatment one or two weeks before your whitening appointment. This will enhance your whitening results.
Number 6
Come in for your teeth whitening appointment or to pick up a custom, at-home whitening kit.
Number 7
If traditional whitening solutions are not a viable treatment for your situation, do not worry. Our experienced dentists will work with you to find another solution that will work, such as bonding or veneers.

Some of Our Patients' Results

Will My Teeth Whitening Process be In-Office or At-Home?

Most patients will be offered a choice to get their teeth whitening in our office or with a kit we customise for you to take home. Both approaches work, but our take-home kits are not like the over-the-counter solutions you may find at the pharmacy. Those products may lead to issues like gum irritation or extreme and long-lasting teeth sensitivity. In many cases, they simply do not work as advertised. Our professional kits from Elevate Dental come with customised gel to help you achieve your desired results, and you will get custom trays that securely fit your teeth, so your gel works.

Having your teeth whitening process overseen by a professional ensures you get the results you are looking for. We will take precautions to prevent sensitivity issues while bringing your teeth to their ideal shade of white. The following are what you can expect in either case.

In-Office Whitening is done here in our office in one 90 minute visit. The dentist will first polish your teeth to remove surface plaque, then place gauze around your cheeks and lips to keep your teeth dry. Your gums will be protected, and then the whitening solution will be coated to your teeth and activated with a blue light. After the desired shade of white is achieved, the solution will be removed, and you may receive a fluoride treatment.
At-Home Whitening is a cost-effective solution for patients who prefer to do the treatment at home, yet still, get professional results. Our trays and whitening solutions are customised for each patient, so the tray fits properly, and the gel will whiten your teeth without gum damage. This is superior to over-the-counter solutions where standardised trays don’t fit properly, which can lead to the solution not working or worse, spreading onto your gum, which can irritate and harm them. You will get instructions tailored for your needs, such as how many solutions to use and how long to wear it with the tray. We are here for you if you have any questions during the process.

Many patients utilise the in-office whitening and then follow up with home kits to maintain their sparkle. Simply talk to the dentist and explain your expectation so we can tailor a teeth whitening solution for you.

Keeping Your Teeth White

Of course, you want to maintain your white teeth for as long as possible, which is easy with proper care.

Avoid foods and beverages that stain for 1-2 weeks after your treatment, and during your entire treatment for at-home kits.
Avoid smoking for at least two weeks.
Brush and floss according to your dentist’s recommendations.
Use any toothpaste or mouthwash as recommended by your dentist or hygienist
Follow-up with an at-home whitening kit every 6-12 months

Whiten for Life Program

We know that teeth whitening doesn’t last forever, so we offer our patients a convenient way to maintain their beautiful smile. Our Whitening for Life program offers a set price for take-home whitening solutions. Keeping your teeth white is best done after professional teeth cleaning, so we provide a whitening solution for each 6-month checkup. Not only will you enjoy whiter teeth for life, but your teeth will remain healthy as we help keep away tartar and plaque and can find any problems early.

Went this afternoon for an appointment after not having been to the dentist since god-knows-when. The team booked me in at a time that suited me, were really easy to deal with, the process was simple and I was in and out (with a filling and an x-ray) within my hour lunch break. Dr James was really good and they made me feel comfortable and relaxed (even when I panicked over the big anaesthetic needle). The cost was really reasonable and I am definitely going to recommend to everyone.
